Next electronics recycling event scheduled

CHAMPAIGN — The next free countywide electronics recycling event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 12 at The News-Gazette Distribution Center, 3202 Apollo Drive, Champaign.

Drivers are asked to enter the event at Market Street and Olympian Drive.

Items that will be accepted include televisions; computers and accessories including monitors, keyboards, mice and cables; DVD players; CD players; VCRs; stereos; mobile phones; hard drives; printers; scanners; and copiers.

According to the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, certain functioning electronics — such as newer model desktop or laptop computers — are sorted and selected to be refurbished and remarketed.

State law establishes stringent data-wiping standards for electronics.

Software is used to overwrite the data, and data storage drives and devices are shredded.

The event will be held rain or shine.

For information on the event, visit the regional planning commission’s website at www.ccrpc.org or call 328-3313.
