Danville police seek Chicago-area man in sexual assaults
DANVILLE — Danville police are releasing the name and photo of a Chicago-area man who is wanted in connection with two separate sexual assaults that occurred last week on the city's east side.
An arrest warrant was issued Monday for Darrin Mitchell, 26, of Riverdale, for aggravated criminal sexual assault, Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said.
He said Mitchell is also wanted on another warrant for attempted criminal sexual assault that was issued on Friday.
Mitchell is described as a black male who is 6-foot-2 and weighs 156 pounds. His back is slightly hunched.
Mitchell may be armed and should not be approached, Thomason cautioned.
Two women reported the attacks about 15 minutes apart on the morning of Sept. 10.
Police first were called to a 22-year-old woman's residence at 7:15 p.m. She reported she was walking to a bus stop for work around 5:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of Beechwood Drive when a man jumped from a fenced area and pointed a handgun at her.
She said the man grabbed her and pushed her into a wooded area and assaulted her.
Police were then approached by a 26-year-old woman who told them a man had attempted to sexually assault her.
The woman said she had been walking in the 1600 block of Beechwood Drive around 5:30 a.m. when a man grabbed her from behind and tried to push her into a wooded area. However, a vehicle in the area scared the suspect away.
Thomason said anyone with information about Mitchell's whereabouts are asked to call 911, Danville police at 431-2250 or Vermilion County Crimestoppers at 446-TIPS.
He also said a lot of rumors have been circulated, many on Facebook.
"We are always encouraging and willingly accepting information to police on the whereabouts of a suspect or any information related to cases," he said. "But misinformation posted has negative effects. Resources are heavily taxed under those conditions as well as putting some people at risk based on unsubstantiated postings."
