Man must make restitution for stolen Walmart electronics

URBANA — A former employee of the Walmart store on North Prospect Avenue in Champaign was ordered to repay the store $7,480 after he admitted stealing electronics from the retailing giant.

John A. Clapp, 26, whose last known address was in the 800 block of North Lincoln Avenue, Urbana, pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony theft before Judge Tom Difanis.

He admitted that between December 2012 and March 28, he stole at least 20 iPad minis, and other electronic items, while employed at the Walmart as a stocker.

Assistant State's Attorney Stephanie Weber said the thefts were discovered by Walmart loss prevention employees who called Champaign police. Police recovered several items in Clapp's apartment, said Weber.

In addition to the restitution, Clapp was sentenced to 30 months of probation. He had no prior convictions, Weber said.
