Ivesdale monitoring Bement school reorganization talks

IVESDALE — Officials want to make sure their community is considered during the Bement school district's reorganization discussion.

The Bement school board is in talks about a joint feasibility study with the Cerro Gordo school district on options including deactivating Bement High School, a full consolidation with Cerro Gordo or a cooperative high school. Under deactivation, Bement high schoolers — and possibly middle schoolers — would attend classes at Cerro Gordo, but the Bement school district would continue to operate an elementary school.

Ivesdale Village President Donna Gallivan told village board members this week that she and Village Administrator Jim Brewer recently met with Unit 7 Superintendent Andrew Larson and school board President Fred Koss about the possibility of Ivesdale students attending Unit 7 schools since most of Ivesdale is in Champaign County, and Bement is in Piatt County.

Ivesdale sends 53 students in grades kindergarten through 12 to Bement schools.

Gallivan said she planned to attend a reorganization meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Bement High School to help the Bement school board make "an informed decision."

"I'm going to go to the board and ask them to think about how Ivesdale is unique," Gallivan said. "My theory is knowledge is power."

It is 12.6 miles from Ivesdale to Tolono; it's 18.1 miles from Ivesdale to Cerro Gordo.
