Teen identified in fatal I-57 accident

CHAMPAIGN — The death of a Champaign teen on Interstate 57 early Friday is being investigated as a suicide.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Colin M. Pitt, 17, died from multiple blunt force injuries he received when he apparently ran in front of a semitrailer tractor truck about 12:10 a.m.

Illinois State Police said Christopher Scheffel, 47, of Trenton, was driving north near Champaign when he reported that a young man appeared to intentionally run in front of his truck.

The teen came from the ditch on the east side of the road and Scheffel was unable to stop or swerve it time to avoid hitting him. Mr. Pitt was thrown into the right ditch after being hit by the right front of the rig.

The coroner’s office pronounced him dead at the scene.

Scheffel was not physically injured.
