No one hurt as van hits Rantoul post office

RANTOUL — No one was injured when a van driven by a Gifford woman struck the side of the Rantoul post office Monday afternoon.

Rantoul police Sgt. Sean Arie said Janice Simmons, 79, was pulling her vehicle into a parking place in front of the post office when she hit the accelerator rather than the brake. The Toyota van jumped the curb, drove onto the sidewalk and traveled several yards before it struck the southeast side of the building.

Police were called at 1:14 p.m.

Arie said the accident caused more than $500 damage to both the vehicle and the building.

Simmons was the only human occupant of the vehicle, Arie said. A dog was also riding in the van.

No tickets were issued.
