Fundraiser for veteran funerals starts Friday

Staffers at a group of local funeral homes are raising money starting Friday for the newly formed Operation Honor Guard.

Co-owner of Sunset Funeral Homes Rich Darby said his family and staff across Central Illinois and Indiana are partnering with American Legion Posts to collect funds for rifles, ammunition and uniforms that the Honor Guard uses to perform military rites at veterans' funerals

Darby said the idea for the project first came to him over the summer at a funeral when he recognized how much dedication Honor Guards have in giving fallen soldiers dignified and respectful farewells.

Darby added that the public sometimes takes the Honor Guard for granted and asks that people take the time to thank the former servicemen and women after funerals.

Operation Honor Guard will be at different locations every Friday outside of businesses, starting this Friday on the square in Covington, Indiana.  The group will also be at multiple locations in Illinois in October and November.  The campaign will run through Nov. 1.
