Busy times around C-UPHD as health insurance marketplace opening nears

Public health employees in Champaign-Urbana have been putting in a lot of hours behind the scenes getting ready to help you with health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Administrator Julie Pryde said the local health district is the lead agency in Champaign County for providing information about the new propram and helping people sign up for insurance.

She said the added demand for services has led to additional staff and more training.  She said the C-UPHD lobby was also remodeled to direct the flow of people more efficiently.

You can sign up for a health insurance plan yourself online beginning Oct. 1, or you can go to the public health district's main office for help in person.  A number of other organizations are also offering face-to-face help, such as PACE and Champaign County Healthcare Consumers.

But Pryde stressed that any help provided to you should be free. She warned that scammers are already trying to take advantage of seniors and others.

When you go for help, you'll need to bring documents showing your income, Illinois residency and citizenship.

Pryde said if the volume of calls is any indication, her office will be very busy beginning next Tuesday. The C-U Public Health District main office is located at 201 West Kenyon Road in Champaign.

More information on the health insurance marketplace is available here.
