Early numbers show hot, dry September in Illinois

It's been a warm and dry September in Champaign-Urbana and throughout Illinois, and the preliminary numbers back that up.

State Climatologist Jim Angel said through Sunday, the total precipitation this month in C-U is around 0.7 inches.  That's nearly 2.5 inches below normal. Statewide, the average rainfall for the month is around 1.9 inches.  That's around 1.4 inches below normal and the third month in a row that precipitation has been below average.

Angel also said through Sunday, the average temperature in Champaign-Urbana for September is 70 degrees.  That's around four degrees above normal.  Statewide, the average temperature for the month is around 69 degrees.  That's around three degrees above average and reverses a trend we saw from June through August.  Those three months saw below-average temperatures.
