UI student formally charged with murder

A University of Illinois graduate student has been formally charged in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend last Friday morning in Urbana.

Yongfei Ci, 29, was charged in court Monday with first degree murder, home invasion, and aggravated kidnapping.  His bond remained at $10 million and the order also remained in place that Ci is not allowed to contact the victim's friend if he's released from jail.

Ci is due back in court on Oct. 22.

The victim is 25-year-old Mengchen Huang, who was also a student at the UI from China.

Police allege Ci forced his way into Huang's apartment at the One South Apartment Complex in the 1300 block of North Lincoln Avenue. He then shoved Huang's friend against the door, put duct tape on her mouth and put her in the bathroom. Ci also put duct tape on Huang's mouth.

Ci then killed Huang, police said, while the other woman was able to escape from the bathroom and call for help.

Ci was arrested later that day without incident in Champaign.
