Next Champaign schools bargaining session could be without mediator

The partial shutdown of the federal government will be felt at the bargaining table next Monday in Champaign public schools if the shutdown continues until then.

The federal mediator that is involved in negotiations between the Champaign Federation of Teachers and the school board is on furlough.

But, both sides said that bargaining teams will go ahead and meet as initially scheduled next Monday, with or without the mediator.  A spokesperson for each side said they don't want to delay efforts to reach a contract settlement.

Teachers are threatening to strike if negotiations hit a dead-end.  The earliest they could walk out is Oct. 18.
