Teen sentenced to 4 years in attempted aggravated robbery
URBANA — An Urbana teen who admitted trying to steal a bicycle from another teen while armed was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison.
Deadric Gaines, 18, who listed an address in the 2700 block of East Illinois Street, pleaded guilty before Champaign County Judge Heidi Ladd to attempted aggravated robbery.
He admitted that on June 10, he tried to take a bicycle from an 18-year-old man outside the Urbana Free Library, 210 W. Green St., while indicating he had a gun.
Assistant State's Attorney Dan Clifton said Gaines was identified as being in a group of men that surrounded the victim and threatened to hurt him if he didn't hand over the bicycle. Gaines lifted his shirt, displayed what appeared to be a gun, and said, 'Don't make me shoot you,' Clifton said.
The victim and his friend got on their bikes and got away.
Gaines was later found at Crystal Lake Park. On the rear tire of a truck near where he and co-defendant Xavier Hilson, 20, of the 800 block of West Church Street, Urbana, were stopped, police found two pellet guns.
Hilson pleaded guilty to the same crime in August and was sentenced to three years of probation. Clifton said Gaines had a prior adult conviction for burglary as well as adjudications for burglary and residential burglary as a juvenile.
