Baby shower planned for women veterans
DANVILLE — The Department of Illinois Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary is hosting the first Women Veterans Baby Shower for female veterans who are new mothers and mothers-to-be.
The shower will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 15 in Building 125, Room 101, at the VA's main campus, 1900 E. Main St., Danville.
"We're trying to do more outreach, and this is a definite need," said Ebun Croom-Osaze, a physician's assistant and the Women Veterans Program manager.
Currently, there are 27 female veterans in the Illiana system's service area who are expecting or who have had a baby within the last two years, Croom-Osaze said. The service area stretches from Peoria to West Lafayette, Ind.
Many served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, "so they're young," she said, adding the women's ages range from 21 to 36.
Croom-Osaze said the public is welcome to stop by and congratulate the new moms. They also can support the effort by making a monetary or non-monetary donation. Donations can be dropped off at the library, Room 111, in Building 125.
"We've had people donate new car seats," Croom-Osaze said, adding the VA can't accept used ones. "They can donate new or gently used baby clothing items, diapers, formula and things of that nature that would really support new moms."
She said program officials are planning to make the baby shower annual event.
