Champaign man charged with home invasion

URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly forced his way into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and struck her is due back in court Nov. 19.

Keyonte Alexander, 22, who listed an address in the 1100 block of North Walnut Street, was arraigned in Champaign County Circuit Court on Thursday on charges of home invasion and unlawful restraint stemming from his arrest about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A Champaign police report said officers were sent to an apartment in the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive, Champaign, where two callers reported a man was hitting a woman and had her in a chokehold.

When police got there, they saw Alexander at the woman's apartment door yelling at her to let him in. When he saw police, he tried walking around the second-floor balcony for a way to get away but was arrested.

The 23-year-old woman told police that she and Alexander had been in a relationship for four years that ended two months ago. She was home Wednesday night with another man when they heard a knock on the door.

When the man opened the door, Alexander allegedly began cursing, walked in and threw the woman into a wall, kicked and slapped her, and put his arm around her throat. He was trying to carry her down an outside stairwell when she broke away and went back into her apartment. He then reportedly tried to get back in through a locked window.

If convicted of the more serious home invasion charge, Alexander faces six to 30 years in prison.

Judge John Kennedy set his bond at $150,000.
