BONGARD — A Villa Grove man ticketed in connection with an accident that killed a Broadlands man last weekend is due in court Nov. 4.
Timothy Bretz, 32, of Villa Grove, was issued a ticket for failure to yield the right-of-way at an unmarked rural intersection where he collided on Oct. 4 with Wyatt Jones, 19, who died the next day.
Champaign County sheriff's Lt. Curt Apperson said the accident happened about 2:44 p.m. that Friday in Raymond Township about five miles west of Broadlands and a mile south of Bongard.
Apperson said Bretz was driving a farm truck with a semitrailer for hauling grain south on County Road 1900 E in Raymond Township while Mr. Jones was headed east on County Road 200 N. He was driving a Buick Century.
Apperson said tall corn on the northwest corner of the intersection apparently obstructed Bretz's view and the two vehicles collided in the intersection.
Both men were the only people in their respective vehicles.
Apperson said Mr. Jones was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where he died about 25 hours later, a victim of multiple traumatic injuries, Northrup said. No autopsy was done. Bretz was not physically injured.
Mr. Jones' car came to rest in a harvested bean field on the southeast corner of the intersection while Bretz's truck and trailer stopped in the roadway, with the trailer slightly jackknifed. Apperson said it was empty.
Mr. Jones' funeral was Thursday.
