Hays picked for GOP leadership position

SPRINGFIELD — State Rep. Chad Hays, R-Catlin, has been named an assistant minority leader of the 47-member Illinois House Republican caucus.

The appointment was announced Thursday by the new Republican leader in the House, Rep. Jim Durkin of Western Springs.

"Chad Hays has shown an extraordinary grasp of the issues and is a truly articulate, refreshing voice on behalf of not only the citizens of the 104th district, but our entire state," Durkin said. "Representative Hays has the unique experience of balancing eight consecutive budgets as a downstate mayor, combined with senior executive experience as a vice president of Presence United Samaritans Medical Center. His breadth of real life leadership acumen has brought a common sense, no-nonsense approach to Springfield that is sorely lacking."

Hays, 50, is serving his second term in the House, having been elected in 2010, and replacing veteran Rep. Bill Black, R-Danville. Hays served as Catlin's village president from 1991 to 1999.

Durkin also named Reps. David Leitch, R-Peoria, and Patti Bellock, R-Westmont, as deputy leaders.

Others named assistant leaders, with Hays, include Reps. Bill Mitchell of Forsyth, Dan Brady of Bloomington, JoAnn Osmond of Gurnee, Dennis Reboletti of Addison and Mike Tryon of Crystal Lake.

"I'm honored by Leader-elect Durkin's confidence in my leadership abilities, but I am most pleased about the opportunity this provides to help advance issues important to families in my district and throughout the region," said Hays.
