Meeting set Tuesday on Medicare/marketplace signup overlap

CHAMPAIGN — A community information meeting has been set for Tuesday morning to help end any confusion that may be arising for some seniors about the overlapping enrollment periods for Medicare and the new Illinois health marketplace.

The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at the Champaign Public Library, 200 W. Green St., C, and will be sponsored by Champaign County Health Care Consumers and the Medicare Task Force.

Medicare open enrollment begins Tuesday and ends Dec. 7 — overlapping the new six-month open enrollment period for the state's new health marketplace that started Oct. 1.

Illinois' marketplace, called Get Covered Illinois, doesn't include any Medicare plans.

The state marketplace is one of the state exchanges that arose from the Affordable Care Act to help uninsured adults younger than Medicare-eligible age and children obtain health coverage.

Medicare enrollment time — the only time when Medicare beneficiaries can make changes in their prescription drug and supplement plans — can be confusing anyway, and promises to be more challenging this year with confusion about the state marketplace health plans, according to Health Care Consumers.
