As winter approaches, CUB offers tips to cut down on gas and electric costs

With winter temperatures on the way, the Citizens Utility Board is offering tips to cut down on your electric and gas bills.

The group held a news conference in Champaign Monday to give the advice in reaction to a recent report from the Energy Information Administration.

That report said Illinois househoulds consume energy at a rate that's 44% above the national average, and that a 13% spike in Midwest gas bills is expected this winter.

CUB spokesperson Laura Goldberg said there are several ways to slash energy costs.

CUB said that if Illinois residents take advantage of these savings options, they could collectively save around $37 million per year.
