Woman recants story about being attacked by hitchhiker
Police say a Mattoon woman has recanted her statement about being assaulted by a hitchhiker and has admitted making a false report to police.
The 32-year-old woman told police that she picked up a hitchhiker in rural Douglas County on Saturday afternoon and that he attacked her and sexually assaulted her. She was treated and released that evening for injuries including a cut to the throat and the lip and an eye that was swollen shut.
But according to a release issued Wednesday night by the Douglas County sheriff's office, the account she gave police was false.
The text of the sheriff's office release:
"The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) in partnership with the Mattoon Police Department (MPD), concluded their investigation of the alleged sexual assault of a 32 year old Mattoon woman in rural Douglas County by a hitchhiker. The facts of the case did not support the victim’s original statement and subsequently the victim has recanted her statement and admitted to making a false report to law enforcement. The results of the investigation will be sent to the Douglas County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine what, if any, charges are appropriate."
