Charges possible in Lincolnshire Drive fire

Police said a Champaign woman could be charged with aggravated arson in connection with a house fire last week on the southwest side of the city.

Detective Joe Johnston said the case against 67 year-old Jane Bergman will now be turned over to Champaign County State's Attorney's Office for consideration.

Johnston said Bergman, who lived in the house at 1107 Lincolnshire Drive with her husband, admitted to placing a rag in the spout of a car's gas tank in the garage and lighting it on fire on Tuesday of last week.  Johnston says Bergman also set a tablecloth on fire and put it the backseat of the car.  The fire spread from the garage to the breezeway and eventually to the house.

Johnston said the charge was elevated to aggravated arson because a firefighter was injured when he opened a back door and fell down the stairs to the basement.  Johnston said the fireman was unable to see the stairs due to all of the smoke from the fire.
