Westville seeks input on school reorganization

WESTVILLE — School officials say they will be exploring different school reorganization options and want input from the community about what is important.

"We are at the beginning of a long journey," Westville Superintendent Jim Owens said at this week's school board meeting. "We want to know what people want for their schools and for their kids."

School officials from the Westville and Georgetown-Ridge-Farm districts met on Oct. 7 to discuss reorganization options and will meet again next week to continue the talks.

Owens said Wednesday there are lots of options for the board and the community to consider, and that he wants to formulate the best plan and then have the voters decide whether to pursue it.

"At this point, we have more questions that answers," Owens said. "What is your vision for the district? What new courses would you like to see offered ? What new extracurricular activities would you like to see added ?"

School board President Shawn Bennett said the Westville and Georgetown-Ridge Farm school boards are still in the very early stages of reorganization talks.

Owens said that he wants to have public hearings to get input and answer questions from the community, but that so far, the comments he has received about a reorganization with Georgetown-Ridge Farm have all been positive.
