Paxton man killed in bar fight Thursday

PAXTON — A 49-year-old Paxton man died early Friday after a fight outside a bar in downtown Paxton.

Jeffrey D. Potts of Paxton was found by police around 11:49 p.m. Thursday lying on a sidewalk in front of Shooky’s Bar, 103 N. Market St. He had been stabbed in the upper left chest, according to Paxton Police Chief Robert G. Bane.

Mr. Potts was taken by ambulance to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana where he died from his injuries at 12:40 a.m., according to Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup.

An autopsy will be done Friday, Bane said.

A second man found lying on the sidewalk, Sean F. Kelley, 33, of 639 S. Washington St., Paxton, was taken into custody by Paxton police and taken to Gibson Area Hospital in Gibson City where he was treated for injuries and released.

Kelley was arrested for aggravated battery and second-degree murder, according to Bane. He is being held in the Ford County Jail. His bond has been set at $1 million.

Bane said police recovered a knife at the scene.

The dispute started inside the bar, Bane said, but the stabbing occurred outside on the sidewalk. Bane said he did not know what the dispute was about. He declined to provide other details, including whether other people may have been involved.
