PTA Council hosts safety forum

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign PTA Council is hosting a safety forum that will include student activities and school physicals.

The event will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Mellon Administrative Center, 703 S. New St., C., and the adjacent South Side Elementary, 712 S Pine St., C.

The event will run through 8 p.m.

At the Mellon building, discussion topics will be student safety, including social media and Internet safety and bullying; school safety, which will address situations like hard and soft lockdowns; and community safety, including safe routes to schools and stranger danger.

The discussion will include representatives from the Champaign Police Department, C-U Safe Routes to Schools and the East Central Illinois Safe Schools Alliance.

At South Side, a group called Helping Revitalize Medical Education through Service, which is run by University of Illinois medical students, will be on-site providing free school and sports physicals for students who still need them.

Parents must be present to sign all required paperwork.

The UI student group will also offer free cholesterol, glucose and blood-pressure screening for parents.

Also at South Side, the University of Illinois Alpha Xi Delta house will host Halloween-themed student activities, including crafts and games. These activities will run concurrently with the safety forum at the Mellon building.

Interpreters will be available at both events.
