Second carnival worker arraigned in DeWitt County

CLINTON — The second of two carnival workers was arraigned on Friday in connection with the death of a rural Farmer City man whose body was found on Sept. 7.

Alexander C. Jacquart, 22, who listed an address in Valders, Wis., was charged with five counts of murder and one count of armed robbery.

After Jacquart’s public defender, attorney Phillip Lamkin, asked that his appointment as public defender in this case be vacated, a hearing was set for Tuesday on that motion.

A second defendant, James W. F. Jacquart, 25, who listed an address in Manitowoc, Wis., was charged with five counts of murder and one count of armed robbery on Oct. 3.

His next court appearance was set for Oct. 31.

Both men are being held on $1 million bond.

Both were employed by Big H Amusements of Fairbury. Big H Amusements was the carnival operator for the Farmer City Heritage Days festival.

The body of 21-year-old Blayne Benefield, formerly of Champaign, was found at 7:16 a.m. Sept. 7 in a lot near downtown by a pedestrian who immediately notified police. Court documents accuse the two men of stabbing and strangling Benefield and stealing his wallet.

DeWitt County State’s Attorney Karle Koritz described the killing as “a senseless act of violence” and praised the work of law enforcement involved, including the Illinois State Police, DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office and Farmer City Police Department.

Mr. Benefield had attended Champaign Central High School and had worked at Remmers Trucking in Farmer City.
