Champaign felon gets prison for having rifle

URBANA — A Champaign man who possessed a modified rifle about two months ago has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Lavell Drisdell, 19, whose last known address was in the 1200 block of South State Street, pleaded guilty Tuesday before Champaign County Judge Heidi Ladd to unlawful possession of weapons by a felon.

Assistant State's Attorney Dan Clifton said Drisdell was arrested by Champaign police at the Illinois Terminal in downtown Champaign on Aug. 19 after police, acting on a tip, found him in possession of a cut-down .22-caliber rifle.

Clifton said police had received information that Drisdell was en route to Champaign on a bus and that he had at least one gun. The gun was found in Drisdell's duffel bag.

Clifton said Drisdell had a prior conviction out of Will County for aggravated unlawful use of weapons.
