Urbana man gets probation for theft from roommate

URBANA — An Urbana man who admitted stealing from a roommate has been sentenced to a year of probation.

Hashim Bryant, 21, whose last known address was in the 1300 block of North Lincoln Avenue, pleaded guilty last week before Champaign County Judge Harry Clem to misdemeanor theft.

He admitted stealing items from a roommate's room at the One South apartment complex on North Lincoln Avenue in late May.

Bryant was also sentenced to 30 days in the county jail.

In return for his plea, other charges of residential burglary, burglary and felony theft were dismissed as part of a negotiated plea agreement.

This is one of those "we'll pick your roommates for you!" kinda places, isn't it?

I was in one of those units once. Locks on all the bedroom doors. But I'll bet they still impose joint-and-several liability on each of the lessees.
