Hembrough honored with street designation outside Centennial

The man who coached the Centennial High School football team to its first playoff berth now has a long-term place outside the school.

School and city officials and other well-wishers gathered outside the school Thursday to dedicate a portion of Crescent Drive as Honorary Coach Gary Hembrough Way.

Hembrough was a resident of Champaign for over 50 years before passing away last year.  Before coaching at Centennial, he played and coached football at the University of Illinois.

1984 Centennial graduate Jon Bristow was just one of the lives that Coach Hembrough touched.

Coach Hembrough was also known for his cooking.  His concession trailer was a staple at UI football games and at the Champaign County Fair.
