Rantoul man sentenced for theft

URBANA — A Rantoul man who admitted stealing from a neighbor has been sentenced to two years of probation.

On Friday, Terry L. Porter, 25, of the 1300 block of McCullough Street, pleaded guilty in Champaign County Circuit Court to theft over $500 in connection with items that were stolen from an apartment in the same building on May 29.

Those included a flat screen television and PlayStation 3.

The men were developed as suspects when Porter was seen trying to lower a flat-screen television from his window to co-defendant Hector Maldonado, 18, who was waiting outside below.

Maldonado pleaded guilty in late August to the same charge but received a sentence of one year of conditional discharge.

Charges of residential burglary against each of the men were dismissed.
