Forum scheduled on area transportation needs
CHAMPAIGN — A public forum on Champaign-Urbana's long-range transportation plan will be held Wednesday evening at the Illinois Terminal building in downtown Champaign.
The session, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the meeting room on the fourth floor of the terminal building, will offer residents an opportunity to share their ideas for the future of the community's transportation network and the development of a federally mandated long-range transportation plan.
A facilitator will lead the meeting and a graphic recorder — a local artist — will draw the conversation live on a large sheet of paper.
The long-range transportation plan is a document that needs to be updated every five years and is designed to be a multi-modal planning document for the next 25 years. Its primary purpose is to identify major, regional transportation projects that can be targeted for federal funding.
This long-range plan is titled "Sustainable Choices 2040" because of its focus on sustainability through a planned, integrated travel network.
Under a planning timetable, a draft long-range transportation plan is to presented to local officials next June, with approval by city councils, the county board and other agencies between July and December 2014.
