Two men charged with Rantoul apartment break-in

RANTOUL — Rantoul police on Tuesday recovered most of the items stolen in a residential burglary Monday and arrested two men believed responsible.

Rantoul police Sgt. Justin Bouse said that around noon Tuesday, investigators went to the 700 block of St. Andrews Circle where a home had been burgled Monday. Two televisions, video game systems, guitars and other electronic items had been stolen in that break-in.

Investigators were following up on leads about the burglary and interviewed five men.

Bouse said after the interviews, the men went back inside a home in the 600 block of St. Andrews but investigators continued to keep an eye on the house for a while.

Shortly after uniformed officers left the neighborhood, Bouse said, Demarcus Buie, 18, who was living at that house, came out carrying a television. When investigators drove up to make contact with him, Buie took off running. He ended up going back inside the house with the officers in pursuit.

Having probable cause after seeing the allegedly stolen television, officers forced their way in the apartment, where they spotted a gun on a dining room table that turned out to be a BB gun, Bouse said.

After interviewing all five men again, they determined that Buie and Robbie D. Barrett, 25, also of the 600 block of St. Andrews Circle, were allegedly involved in the Monday burglary.

Both were charged Wednesday with residential burglary. If convicted, they face a mandatory prison term of between four and 15 years.

Bouse said several of the items stolen Monday were found in the home while others were located at a Rantoul pawn shop.
