Fire damages Urbana home

URBANA - Fire displaced six residents from their apartments in north Urbana early Thursday.

Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Dave Sherrick said a man living at 1212 N. Eastern Ave. called 911 at 12:49 a.m. after hearing a noise.

"They heard a popping noise in the attic and smelled smoke," he said.

Carroll Fire Department firefighters responded with help from Eastern Prairie and Edge Scott firefighters and found fire in the attic.

Sherrick said the structure is a single-story building divided into three apartments. Only two were occupied. Four adults lived in one and two in the other. All got out safely.

"It's not suspicious," Sherrick said, adding the firefighters had the fire out fairly quickly but remained there a little over two hours.

Sherrick did not have a damage estimate. He said the fire damage was mostly contained to the attic but there was smoke and water damage throughout.

The building's owner is listed as William Burgess.

Sherrick said the Red Cross was helping the occupants with emergency shelter arrangements.
