Urbana felon charged with having gun
URBANA — A convicted felon from Urbana who allegedly had a loaded handgun in a car earlier this week has been charged with a crime.
Sammy Boykins Jr., 20, who listed an address in the 2700 block of East Illinois Street, was arraigned Tuesday on a single count of aggravated unlawful possession of weapon by a felon.
A Champaign police report said that on Sunday, just before 1 p.m., police were sent to a call of shots fired in the 1100 block of Paula Drive or Joanne Lane. They were told that a blue Dodge had left the area, hitting a parked car as it fled.
Officers found a parked car with front-end damage and paint transfer on it and another car in a driveway in the 1200 block of Joanne Lane with three bullet holes in it.
Police later spotted a blue Dodge with front-end damage and followed it to a driveway in the 1200 block of West Eureka Street in Champaign.
Both the driver and the passenger, later identified as Boykins, got out and started to walk away from the officer. Boykins obeyed the officer's order to get back in the car but got in the rear passenger seat. The officer saw him drop something on the floorboard. A search of the car revealed that it was a loaded .38-caliber gun.
Court records show that Boykins is on parole for robbery. He also has previous adjudications as a juvenile for aggravated battery, resisting a peace officer and having cannabis intended for sale.
Boykins remained in the county jail Thursday in lieu of $150,000 bond. He's due back in court Tuesday.
