Champaign support staff union OKs tentative deal

CHAMPAIGN — The union representing Champaign school district support staff members ratified a tentative contract with the school district Saturday morning.

Champaign Educational Support Professionals Union President Steve Pease said 160 members voted for the contract and 35 voted against it.

The Champaign school board’s Monday agenda includes an action item on approving the tentative contract.

No details will be released until both sides approve it.

The union represents about 540 Champaign school district employees in 14 kinds of jobs, including cooks, mechanics, teaching assistants, secretaries and custodians.

The union’s contract expired July 1, and the two sides have been negotiating since June.
