Teen arrested for campus robbery

CHAMPAIGN - A Rantoul teen-ager was arrested early Saturday for allegedly robbing a University of Illinois student at gunpoint.

Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz said a 21-year-old man was walking on Sixth Street about 2:40 a.m. when he was approached from behind by someone who placed a hard object in his back.

The assailant pushed him behind a home in the 200 block of South Sixth Street, told him to face the wall, and demanded his wallet.

The robber then took $11 from the wallet, handed the wallet back to the man and ran off.

Rietz said the victim called 911 right away using a cellphone.

Police found Dadreon Carter, 18, who listed an address on Mary Alice Drive,  nearby. The victim identified Carter as the man who robbed him.

Police found a BB gun in Carter's waistband and $11 in his pocket.

Rietz said Carter is currently on probation for burglary and has prior contact with the court system as a juvenile.

He is expected to be formally charged on Monday with aggravated robbery.
