Urbana sets high school graduation date

URBANA — The Urbana school district isn't confirming a place yet, but it has a date for this year's high school graduation: May 31.

The school board discussed graduation dates at its Tuesday meeting with Urbana High School Principal Matthew Stark.

The date is a weekend later than the high school's usual tradition of having graduation on Memorial Day weekend, and that change will be for this year only.

The board wants to hand out diplomas to seniors, and also wants to have them finish the school year. This school year, school will continue after Memorial Day weekend by at least two days, and perhaps more depending on how many snow days the district uses.

Board member Ruth Ann Fisher said she felt strongly that the district should keep the Memorial Day tradition, but other board members indicated they'd rather hand out official diplomas and schedule it for the next weekend this year.

Stark also told the board he's looking into the possibility of having the ceremony on the high school and middle school campus, but is still working out the details, so he can't confirm the venue yet.

The board also passed a proposed tax levy, which will ask for $31.5 million.

Last year, it asked for about $29.1 million, and its tax extension, which usually reflects taxes received, was about $28.7 million. However, the district actually got about $3 million less than that, as the Carle Foundation was exempted from paying property taxes.

The board will take final action on the levy in December.
