Fire heavily damages Rantoul home

RANTOUL — No one was home Saturday night when fire extensively damaged a Rantoul home.

Rantoul Fire Chief Ken Waters said the fire at 1204 Sunset Drive was so bad that the occupants will not be able to live in it for a while.

Firefighters were sent to the single-story home in the Prairie View subdivision in the east central part of the village about 8:20 p.m. Saturday.

“We had smoke and flames coming from the bedrooms. It didn’t get into the attic but we ventilated the roof to get the smoke out of there for the good of the guys,” he said of the firefighters.

Waters said firefighters had the flames knocked down in about 10 to 15 minutes and remained there more than an hour cleaning up and trying to figure out what started the fire. About 17 Rantoul firefighters turned out to fight the fire.

He estimated damage to the approximately 900 square foot home at $20,000.

Waters wasn’t certain who was living there but the Champaign County Supervisor of Assessments lists the property owner as Gregory A. Simpson.
