No robbery charges filed against Urbana man

URBANA — The Champaign County state's attorney's office elected not to file charges against a man arrested for an armed robbery on the University of Illinois campus that reportedly happened early Friday.

Assistant State's Attorney Steve Ziegler said from the information given him by Champaign police, he did not believe he could prove that Samuel Pack, 21, of the 400 block of East Michigan Avenue, Urbana, took part in the holdup of a man about 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Ziegler said the 21-year-old victim was leaving Joe's Brewery, 706 S. Sixth St., C, when he ran into two men, one of whom was identified as Pack. Pack and the other man agreed to give the bar patron a ride. Inside the vehicle, the other man with Pack, who was not identified, allegedly pulled a gun on the victim and demanded his money.

Ziegler said the victim reported that Pack appeared to be surprised by the actions of the other man and told him not to be doing that in his car.

The victim did not report being robbed until about 14 hours later.

"I really don't have any evidence Pack was involved," Ziegler said.
