Small fire at Prairie Fruits Farm and Creamery extinguished quickly

URBANA — Firefighters extinguished a small fire at Prairie Fruits Farm and Creamery Friday evening around 6:30 p.m. No one was hurt, including the goats.

Eastern Prairie Fire Chief Mike Kobel said the fire was contained primarily to the roof shingles on the farmhouse at 4410 N. Lincoln Ave., north of Urbana. The rest of the buildings on the property were uninvolved.

Kobel said the occupants were home at the time of the fire but got out safely and were able to call 911.

He estimated the property damage was somewhere around $5,000. He said the preliminary cause seems to be related to a wood stove flue.

The farm is well-known locally for producing goat cheese and other goat dairy products, fruits and vegetables. It hosts outdoor dinners and tours during summer and fall.
