Man gets 1-year sentence for drug DUI

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted having cocaine and driving while under its influence was sentenced Monday to a year in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Roger N. Gill, 59, whose last known address was in the 1200 block of North Market Street, pleaded guilty before Champaign County Judge Richard Klaus to driving under the influence of drugs, a misdemeanor, and possession of cocaine, a Class 4 felony.

The charges stemmed from Gill's arrest on Feb. 16 by Champaign police.

About 4:30 a.m. that day, Gill was seen driving west in the 1300 block of West University Avenue, where traffic is one-way east. He initially wouldn't stop for police but eventually did after going around the block.

Police found suspected crack cocaine outside Gill's vehicle. He failed field sobriety tests.

Gill was sentenced to a year on the possession conviction and 60 days in jail on the DUI, to be served at the same time.

His criminal record dates to 1982 and includes at least eight drug-related convictions.
