Charge of armed habitual criminal dismissed

URBANA — The Champaign County state's attorney's office has dismissed a charge alleging a Rantoul man is an armed habitual criminal.

The charge had been lodged against James Guy, 35, whose last known address was in the 1300 block of Juniper Drive, back in August 2012.

The charge was filed after a shooting in Urbana on Aug. 8 at an apartment in the 2000 block of Vawter Street in which two men were shot. Neither sustained life-threatening injuries.

First Assistant State's Attorney Steve Ziegler said there were no police officers able to identify Guy as having been involved in the shooting and the only civilian witness who could have identified him could not be located for trial.

Guy had been representing himself.

His case was set to be heard by a jury Wednesday morning before Judge Tom Difanis but was dismissed.
