Mattoon Police seek help in recent shootings

The Mattoon Police Department is asking for the public's help on a series of shootings in the area.

Chief of Police Jeff Branson said between Nov. 11 and 24, there have been four separate incidents where someone shot at residences while people were inside.

Branson added that an investigation is ongoing, and while nobody has been injured yet, it's only a matter of time before somebody could be hit by one of the bullets.

Branson also said that the department has sent the bullets to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab to be examined.

He said he's very confident that at least three of the four rounds are of the same caliber, which he said indicates that the shootings are from the same person or people.  But, Branson added that it appears that the incidents were not random acts of gunfire.

If you have any information about the shootings, you can contact the Mattoon Police at 235-5451 or Coles County Crimestoppers at 866-345-8488.
