Man charged with shooting gun surrenders
URBANA — A Champaign man charged with shooting at another man in June turned himself in to Champaign police earlier this week.
Rodell Williams, 20, was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm. He remains in the Champaign County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond and is set to be back in court Jan. 21.
Williams had been charged on June 18, a day after he allegedly fired a gun at a man in the 1000 block of Northwood Drive near McKinley Avenue in northwest Champaign. The 25-year-old man was not hit, but the house he was standing in front of was hit once and its car port twice.
The report said the shooting was in apparent retaliation for a fight earlier in the day in which the man being shot at allegedly punched Williams in the face.
The shooter ran off after firing the shots and was not found. The victim identified Williams as the one who fired in his direction, the report said.
If convicted, Williams faces penalties ranging from probation to four to 15 years in prison.
The shooting was one of about a dozen that plagued north Champaign during June and July.
Williams is also being held on an unrelated domestic battery case.
