County backs 2 of 3 MTD board appointments

URBANA — Champaign County Board members gave preliminary approval Tuesday to the reappointment of two members to the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District Board.

The board agreed, without discussion, to reappoint Champaign Democrats Bradley Diel and Margaret Chaplan to the MTD board. A third applicant, Champaign Republican James Faron, a 33-year Carle optometrist who said he once drove Chicago Transit Authority buses, was not appointed.

In a voice vote on the MTD appointments at Tuesday's committee-of-the-whole meeting, the board's Republican caucus appeared to vote "no." Final action on the reappointments will come at a full board meeting later this month.

The board also approved the appointments of Thom Moore and Susan Fowler to the county mental health board, and Wednesday Medlen to the community action board.

Board members also approved a request for proposals to develop a correctional system re-entry program to help restore and return offenders to the community. Applicants have until Jan. 22 to submit proposals.
