Man gets nine years in prison for having gun

URBANA — A Peoria man who admitted he had a gun when he was not allowed to because of criminal convictions has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

State's Attorney Julia Rietz said Dwayne Henderson Jr., 24, of Peoria, was arrested on Feb. 22, 2012, at the Illinois Terminal in downtown Champaign.

Police had been sent there on a report of a possible robbery. They came in contact with Henderson, who struggled with them. An officer saw the butt of a pistol in his waistband.

During a patdown search of Henderson, police found a 9 mm handgun.

Rietz said Henderson was on parole at the time for a 2010 conviction for possession of a controlled substance.

Henderson pleaded guilty Monday before Judge Heidi Ladd. He was given credit on his sentence for about 14 months already served on his sentence.

Rietz said he had other convictions for possession with intent to distribute a look-alike substance and possession of a controlled substance. He also had a juvenile adjudication for possession of a stolen vehicle.
