Monticello approves water rate increase

MONTICELLO — The city council this week voted to increase water rates 4 percent beginning Jan. 1.

For the average customer using about 4,500 gallons (6 "units") per month, the total increase for 2014 will be $9.12.

The ordinance also includes automatic 4 percent increases every following January.

"It's long overdue," said Aldermen Tim Hayes, who presided as acting mayor in the absence of Chris Corrie. "Based on the quality of our water, we need to recoup more of our costs."

That average user will now pay $19.76 per month for water.

Aldermen also approved an Outdoor Park and Recreation Master Plan as drafted by LandTech design. It outlines maintenance needs, possible park upgrades and some possible funding mechanisms for recreation costs. The plan came out of 18 months of research that included public meetings and interviews with local citizens.
