PAXTON — The city council has given permission to a church-based group to build a community garden on city property on Hunt Street, south of the Family Dollar store.
The outreach committee of the Paxton United Methodist Church had been working with the local park district board to create such a garden on park district property, but a suitable site with water service could not be located.
Ruth Ann Noble, who spoke on behalf of the outreach committee, told the city council that she has extensively researched community gardens in Champaign-Urbana. She said the Urbana Park District has promised help.
Noble said many Paxton residents have approached her, saying the community garden is a good idea.
Ashley Warren, a resource conservationist for the Ford County Soil & Water Conservation District, said her nonprofit agency may be able to offer programs in conjunction with the community garden.
