UI students are getting a free pass to regional

CHAMPAIGN — University of Illinois students won't need to pay to attend the Champaign Regional volleyball tournament this weekend at State Farm Center, thanks to an Illini booster group and the school's athletic department.

The Illini Networkers raised enough money to purchase 200 all-session tickets intended for members of the Spike Squad, a student group that's a regular and animated presence at home matches.

After Illini athletic director Mike Thomas learned of the booster club's initiative, he announced that any UI student attending the regional would be admitted free with a school ID card. Since the NCAA requires paid admission to its postseason events, the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics will cover the cost of any student tickets beyond the 200 purchased by the Networkers.
