Urbana expected to make interim fire chief permanent on Monday

The next fire chief in the City of Urbana won't have to move his office very far to take the top spot.

On Monday night, the city council is expected to appoint Brian Nightlinger to be the leader of the fire department.  Nightlinger is currently serving as interim chief, having taken over for the retired Mike Dilley.

Nightlinger said managing the limited space at the fire department will be one of his top priorities going forward.

Nightlinger added that it was never a goal of his to become fire chief, but he said he's always tried to help the department in any way possible, and that allowed him to rise up the ranks.

Nightlinger started with the University of Illinois Fire Department in 1993 before moving to the Urbana Fire Department in 1998.
