School site may not be known till January

CHAMPAIGN — Waiting to find out where the new Central High School will be built?

It could be a while.

Champaign schools Superintendent Judy Wiegand said Thursday that the announcement may not come until mid-January, after "preliminary engineering studies" on the site are completed.

"They expect to have those results in a few weeks," Wiegand said.

The school board on Monday night selected the site it hopes will be Central's new home, following years of discussions and studies. The board declined to reveal which of the four finalists was chosen, however, and said it wouldn't until negotiating the purchase of the land.

The four sites being considered:

— The northeast corner of Prospect Avenue and Olympian Drive.

— The northwest corner of Prospect and Olympian.

— The southwest corner of Market Street and Olympian.

— North of the T intersection of Interstate Drive and Neil Street.
