Urbana activates sidewalk snow shoveling rules

URBANA — Property owners in the city’s downtown, campus and South Philo Road business districts have less than a day to shovel their sidewalks before they face penalties.

Urbana’s sidewalk shoveling requirements went into effect at 9 a.m. Monday. That gives property owners until 9 a.m. Tuesday to clear their sidewalks of snow and ice before the city does and bills property owners for the work, plus an administrative fee.

Maps of the snow removal districts and other information are available here.

The city is also asking people outside those districts to voluntarily clear their sidewalks. Officials are reminding residents and snow plow contractors that moving snow from private property onto public property is illegal.

The city of Champaign, which gives its downtown and Campustown property owners 48 hours to clear their sidewalks, enacted its sidewalk shoveling rules at 9 a.m. Sunday. Like Urbana, that gives Champaign residents until 9 a.m. Tuesday as well.
